Intervention description
Talking Maths is a 10 week intervention which targets speaking and listening skills in the context of mathematical language. It is aimed at pupils from Year 1 to Year 7, including EAL learners, who show mathematical competence but need to develop their use and understanding of mathematical language. It aims to support them in learning how to use mathematical vocabulary and terminology.
Professional development/training
Talking Maths is developed by Education Works, and supports teachers and TAs to model good mathematical language and questioning. The intervention can actively support the current in-class maths focus or can be used as a 'stand-alone'. Education Works provide training in Talking Maths, which takes place over 1.5 days and covers the programme overview and implementation, activities demonstration and practical participation. Training can be delivered in school or at another location of the school’s choice for up to 20 people, and a follow-up half day visit for further support is available. Schools participating in the training receive a guide to assessment, planning and recording, a copy of the Talking Maths booklet, and a CD containing electronic versions of training materials and further resources.
