Intervention description
Cued Spelling is a paired intervention that incorporates the methods and approaches of paired reading, with the aim of helping pupils gain the ability to spell confidently and accurately as well as maintaining a high level of motivation. Devised by Keith Topping and colleagues at the University of Dundee, it involves either parent and child or two children working together – in the latter case the roles of tutor and tutee may be fixed, or be reversed from time to time. Working on a brief but regular one-to-one basis (generally around three 15-minute sessions a week, for a period of 6-8 weeks), peer tutors guide the tutee using simple techniques, strategies and prompts to provide immediate feedback and support.
